Residents across from Proposed Port Development Seek Hearing
Published in the Stockton Record on 03/15/04
Some Brookside homeowners are upset enough about Port of Stockton development plans on the other side of the San Joaquin River that they're seeking a hearing before the Stockton City Council.

A group calling itself the Brookside Concerned Citizens Group wants the council, in its role as redevelopment agency, to consider the adverse effects resulting from the Port of Stockton's plan to develop Rough and Ready Island, Brookside resident Matt Brooks said. Some members plan to attend today's council meeting.

The 1,433-acre island, formerly a Navy base turned over to the port in 2000 for development, has a mile-long wharf that mostly has been unused for decades.

The petition says future development promises to generate air and water pollution, Delta levee erosion, traffic congestion, noise and vibrations, and stadium-style lights.

Residents of the Rivera Cliffs neighborhood, just south of Brookside, already are suing the port over increased ship docking and loading activity there.

The City Council meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. today.
