Public Pulse - Not Ready For More Rough Nights

As a 35-year neighbor of Rough and Ready Island - and a plaintiff in the suit against the Port of Stockton - I read with great interest that the port has tried to mitigate noise, air and light pollution associated with its around-the-clock shipping and warehousing industry (The Record, June 12).
The port claims it's spent $53,000 "going after" these problems. It didn't work. When ships are at Rough and Ready Island, they continue loading until long past midnight and start again at 7a.m. The loud generators run all night long. I still can't get a food night's sleep when a ship is docked. For 70 years, the port has operated without the use of Rough and Ready Island. The 10 berths the Port has used still are available - with no loss of jobs and without disturbing residents. The port director was quoted as saying ships loading rice operated only about 30 days and nights of the year. Is it possible he doesn't know ships have loaded across from Riviera Cliffs for some period each month (except September) from August through March? Why is he so unwilling to disclose plans for even greater and more invasive use of the area? Why isn't he more forthcoming and appreciative of the financial bonanza the port has realized from land and improvements - virtually at no cost - since Rough and Ready Island was given to the port? Airports near residential neighborhoods aren't allowed to let jets land and take off in the middle of the night. Large trucks can't make deliveries to grocery stores located near residences during sleep hours. Why should the port be allowed to load and unload cargo ships right next to my back yard whenever it wants? Why should the port be allowed to disrupt my sleep? This isn't fair and it's not right.
